The best advise I can give you, is to start studying and get hold of every book on sales you can find. I have been selling for 30 years and I will grant you, expertise really does rule the day. However back when I was beginning and knew nothing, I just read every book I could get my hands on.

"How To Master The Art Of Selling" by Tom Hopkins. Tom Hopkins is really a salesman's salesman. This book has been around since the early 1980's. It has gone through several reprints and the latest copy at Amazon may be had for a little more than ten dollars. This is one of the very few books that can serve as a bible of selling... highly recommended.
"Selling 101: What Every Successful Sales Professional Needs to Know" by Zig Zigler. There was a time when I owned each and every tape Zig ever made, and the man made a lot of them. He is an absolute delight to hear and teaches each move a good salesperson will ever need in this book. Likewise highly recommended. If you like Zig, I encourage you to grab several of his recordings, you won't ever tire of listening to them.
The next ability you need to learn, is the way to generate your own leads. The real pros in network marketing just about all create their own leads one way or another. The key reason why you need to develop your own leads, is that, when prospective customers are coming to you rather than you chasing after them, you're in a whole new ballgame.
When a prospective client asks you for advise, and that is what these people will do with self generated leads, you're in charge. If you are in charge, people do what you advise, which is to sign up with your plan. It isn't unusual for networkers that develop their leads to complete a fresh signup to their primary plan every day of the week.
Stop to do some figuring and see if you're able to develop an income projection of just how much you'd be making if you are just enrolling a new recruit once per week. That is a very attainable goal that you can hit in a month from getting started.
